The RHINO project, a coordinated initiative supported by Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and co-funded by the European Commission, comes to a successful close after more than two years of intensive research into innovative ways of electrifying chemistry.
Led collaboratively by research teams from ITQ-CSIC and DIMAS-ITACA, RHINO has achieved all of its main goals, with successful results. The project focused on the development of electrified reactors—including electrochemical membrane reactors and microwave-driven reactors—which use electricity to supply the energy needed for chemical reactions with high selectivity. These advances aim to enable disruptive, energy-efficient processes that support the green transition of the chemical industry toward a more sustainable and resource-efficient model.
Throughout the project, the teams investigated several catalytic reactions, primarily related to hydrogen production pathways. After intense and dedicated efforts to meet the project’s technical goals, the researchers are now in the process of finalizing several scientific publications based on their findings.
